Located in Brownsville and originally designed in 1912 by architect Atlee B. Ayers, the Cameron County Courthouse restoration involved a full interior and minor exterior historic restoration aimed at preserving the building’s historic grandeur while upgrading core building systems for modern functionality. Working alongside Roberto J. Ruiz Architect, Inc., JRJ Construction completed an extensive restoration effort totaling more than $8.5 million in construction improvements.

The project included restoration and repair of historic wood windows and doors, refinishing and replication of historic hardware, ornamental plaster restoration, marble restoration work, and extensive upgrades to the building’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. One of the defining features of the restoration was the preservation and revitalization of the courthouse’s stained-glass rotunda, ensuring the building’s architectural centerpiece remained intact for future generations. Through careful craftsmanship and historically sensitive construction practices, the project successfully modernized the courthouse while preserving the civic identity and historic significance of the landmark.
